Abstract Title: Ozempic for the Mind
Dr. Stephen Gullo has pioneered the Behavioral Nutrition model for clinical weight control and is the founder of the Center for Health Sciences in New York City. When The New York Times conducted a survey of the nation’s leading weight experts for its prestigious T-List, there was a consensus of just two names in the field of weight control. Dr. Gullo was honored to be one of the two. He received his doctorate in psychology from Columbia University, where he was the Paterson Fellow in Psychology, and Dr. William McGill, then the president of Columbia, served as a mentor for his doctoral research. After graduation he did post-doctoral studies Institute for Cancer Research, Columbia University Medical Center, post-doctoral studies in nutrition at the Campbell Center for Nutrition at Cornell. For more than a decade he was a professor and researcher at Columbia University Medical Center. Upon stepping down from his position at Columbia, Dr. Gullo was honored at an international gathering at the United Nations, hosted by the President of the United Nations General Assembly and awarded the prestigious Schoenberg Award by colleagues from Columba and Harvard “for the development of unique and creative modes of weight control.” He received the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center Award of Excellence for greatly improving the quality of life of the overweight, and the Grand Cross of Merit from Italy’s Academy for Economic and Social Development. He is the former chair of the National Obesity and Weight Control Education Program of the American Institute for Life-Threatening Illness at that medical center. He also served as a member of the Advisory Board of Prevention Magazine. For a decade he served as a member of the Committee on Grants and Professional Education of the American Cancer Society, New York Region. He has contributed chapters to many scholarly textbooks and peer-reviewed journals, including one in a forthcoming textbook from Oxford University Press. He was one of the editors of the landmark textbook: “Obesity, New Directions in Assessment and Management.” His first book for the general public, Thin Tastes Better, was a national bestseller. His second book, The Thin Commandments, was selected by People Magazine as one of the best diet books of the year and People Magazine did a special feature on his work. His work has been featured in over 20 cover stories including two in The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Hollywood Reporter, and numerous quotes in The Wall Street Journal. He was a contributing editor for Self Magazine, weight consultant for Allure Magazine, and served as a member of the editorial board of Woman’s Health, the largest fitness magazine for women in the United States. Bottom Line Personal named him as one of the giants of the field of weight control. He has been interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, Larry King, and Barbara Walters and has also made numerous appearances on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and Hard Copy. Dr. Gullo was the first person to apply the motivational strategies of the advertising world to the field of weight control and remains one of the most engaging and innovative voices in the field. His practice has drawn an international following including families of presidents, members of reigning royal families, legendary athletes, celebrities, and clients who have crisscrossed the globe from Lagos to Shanghai for his innovative thinking and methods.
